Think Like a Freak (Audio)

I’ve always felt like I, as the show says, “think like a freak”. Freakonomics radio is a wondeful listen for me as a stats teacher, giving me thoughts on projects and discussions. This one verified that I indeed am a good parent! Bribery! Well, at least I think I am good. Kinda. Enjoy! Subscribe to these guys! It’s always worth the 20-ish mnutes.

  1. This is one of the clearest audio recordings I’ve ever heard.
Great topic. As a math teacher, “freakonomics” is a fantastic topic because it utilizes mathematics and so much more. I think older students would really enjoy learning more about this.

  2. I have subscribed to Freakonomics for the past year and enjoy the podcasts immensely. I love that they are shorter, so that you can listen to them on a commute or while waiting for something. How have you used these in your class or applied them to your class?

    • Hi, Hanna. I only recently decided to included this as part of the curriculum (I work at a charter school where it seems I have a touch more carte blanche in regards to clssroom decisions) for my AP statistics course. What I plan on doing at this point is to assign a pre-chosen (and listened to) episode for the students to listen to at the beginning of a week, open a blog question that asks a question in regards to the poscast’s topic, and have the students comment on the question/podcast in the comment section of the blog post. I’ll award points based on quality of their post (was it just a thumbs-up? 1 point. Was it a run-of-the-mill answer to the question? 3 points. Was it a thought-provoking response that gave us all more to think about? 5-10 depending on my lenient subjectiveness. And then there is an ultimate goal of points attained for that portion of their grade). I’m sure over time I’ll have to tweak a lot with this idea, but for now I’m excited about the inclusion of blogging in my stats classes, and this seemes a perfect way to start. Thanks!
