Universal Design and Visual Literacy

universaldesign

This visual (from Brown Aviation Lease Company) falls into the decorative visual category, as the accompanying text provides the necessary information for the consumer. The image itself ultimately is redundant, but it improves the overall effectiveness of the message. If a consumer of this website finds themselves interested in the particular links, the graphics were not absolutely called for to allow for successful navigation of the page (presumably an interested customer/contributor to this site wouldn’t need child-like graphics to steer them in the right direction), but the images do convey a light-heartedness  that Brown Aviation most likely is striving for their customers to grasp.

Lohr partially defines visual literacy as “make decisions regarding the integrity of the information displayed.” (pg. 14) The image this company chose certainly allows for the customer to decide (determine?) what this company will provide for their potential needs. As far as the image “creating meaning” for the consumer, it seems a non-factor due to the fact that an individual that may find themselves in the position of clicking these icons would undoubtedly be cognizant of what they are attempting to look at with just the text provided.

Personal Image

Untitled-1.fwI really do love my family- I have the greatest wife in the history of the world, 5 incredible children, and the best time being with them. The center photo is of my wife and I with friends at a local pub (The Whiskey Bar to be exact) celebrating yet another win at trivia, and just having a blast doing it. And then the kids surrounding us are all a joy in their own rights. Madeleine is off to college next year (crazy!), Briannah to high school, Kade is a year away from being a teen, Penelope is dominating the first grade curriculum (and she loves to write! I think she wants to try to write books when she’d older- like next year), and Ivy will be in kindergarten next year! Wow!

I simply used a brown background because, well, having kids makes it such that you HAVE to have a favorite color (and animal, and song, and book…), so brown it is!

I definitely have a lot to learn here with this course- editing, placement, and so on, but I’m looking forward to it for sure.

Lafayette Business Scavenger Hunt (100 points)

Dig your town you’re schooling in? Me too. It’s amazing to see the diversity of small business ownership here in Lafayette, and this task asks you to investigate that. It’s meant to be fun, and really, if you live far outside of Lafayette, this probably won’t be right for you, but no worries! Plenty of point opportunities out there. Here, you need to find the emblems (logos) of 8 Lafayette businesses, take a photo of it, then find a format to deliver the hunt (i.e., a Powerpoint, a series of emails/Snapchats, Twitter, whatever you can think of). Just remember, it needs to be 8, and it needs to be challenging, but not impossible. Upclose shots of the emblems, a little discoloration.

lafayette

To complete:

1. Cruise the streets of Lafayette, finding businesses that are local (i.e., not Chipotle) and take an image of their logo/emblem, making it such that it would require some investigation to figure out what it is of.

2. Put together a ‘hunt’ that could be given to others in the class for them to try to complete (and the challenge for them needs to be that in order for them to get credit for completing it, they have to photo themselves at the place of the emblem itself)

3. Get points by: a) showing me the completed scavenger hunt proposal for 70 b) get 3 others to complete the hunt (don’t help them!) for 10 points each.

4. You also get points if you complete a hunt created by someone else (10 points) but you can only do that once.

Voicethread Lesson (175 points)

Maybe you like technology, and would like to develop a ‘Powerpoint’ type lesson for others to view instead of teaching a class like this. No problem. During access for three weeks (January 22nd is the first, then the following 2 Thursdays) the amazing Ms. Letter and I will conduct a lesson for those not taking discrete this year on financial responsibility during college. You can attend one of the lessons, take notes, and then create a Voicethread on what we did in your own words, but essentially the same stuff. Pretty simple, and if you’d prefer to use Prezi, go right ahead, although you have to pay for that program, and I have no access to it. NO POWERPOINTS though. I would prefer the voice capability of Voicethread be included in the project/task.

voicethread

To complete:

1. Attend one of the financial lessons given during access by my wonderful wife and I, taking notes and ask me a few questions about what we went over afterwards.

2. Open up a new Voicethread project and put it together. Gonna take a little patience and practice to get this program down effectively.

3. Email me the finished result.

Shark Tank Quizzes (75 points)

shark-tank1Shark Tank! Sweet! That’s right, we’re going to view this business show in order to see how the financial world rolls. Interesting stuff, great stories, and fascinating mathematics happening here, and y’all will be part of the insanity! Each Friday we’ll watch an episode, one that has aired somewhat recently. The following Monday, we’ll do a short (10-question) quiz on the dollars discussed, the percentages thrown around in the Tank, and monies involved. But this quiz can not only be taken for a few points, but it can be created for triple the points! You will make the quiz here from having watched the show on the previous Friday, making sure the questions fit the show we watched, and of course keeping the majority of questions mathematical (although you can throw in a few that are not dealing with the math of the show if you’d like- just not more than half of them, and they need to be possible to answer.)

To complete:

1. Declare the episode yours to ‘make the quiz’.

2. Watch the episode, taking notes and paying attention to the details.

3. Make a quiz using the Socrative program I am signed up in (you’ll need my user credentials for this).

4. Sit back and watch the students enjoy your quiz!

Biz Kids Video (125-200 points)

More high value! This one will require 2 partners (maybe), and each member will receive the 200 points.

[Biz Kid$ is an American television series for middle-school-aged children ages 11-14 that debuted on PBS Kids Go! on January 6, 2008. The series was produced by American Public Television. It has 65 episodes on 5 seasons, it debuted the episodes on most PBS stations and reruns on the weekends. The series ended on March 25, 2012. The cast of the show is about 10 teenagers. The TV rating for this show is rated TV-GBiz Kids was created by the producers of Bill Nye the Science Guy, the Emmy Award winning science show from the 1990s. It teaches financial education and entrepreneurship to a preteen audience. It uses sketch comedy and young actors to explain basic economic concepts.[1] Its motto is “Where kids teach kids about money and business.” [wikipedia]]

Your task here is to create your own version of one of the Biz Kid videos produced, either #304 “Where is My Allowance?”, or #501 “What’s Your Money Personality?”

I have shown you the DVD of these episodes, now it’s your turn. Your task here is to create your own incarnation of one of these videos. The 125 point version of this task is to make a video that is 8-15 minutes in length, and detail exactly what was detailed in the video you chose (they have several other choices as well, you can investigate on their website, Biz Kids). You also could try to make 4 short (30 second-2 minute) videos that our classroom helper Max could include in the video announcements every other week for the 200 points. But they’d have to be good, worth Max’s and the school’s time for sure.

Before you embark on the making of your video, please detail to me the plan for making it. In order to receive credit, I first need to know your plan. If you’re completed project can be shown to our discrete class, add 20 points, or if you can manage to get the video announcement crew to air them in the announcements, then 25 additional points (but only one group could possibly receive that 25). To complete:

1) Watch the video you’re going to re-create.

2) Detail a plan for your re-creation.

3) Show me the plan

4) Make the video(s).

5) Put the video on youtube, and give me the link (or get Max to include them in the announcements and tell me with Max alongside).

6) If applicable, we’ll show the video to either the class, for the potential of more points.

Voting Plan (200 points)

Only one group of 2-3 people can do this, so it’s first come first serve. Student Council will conduct a vote for StuCo leadership for 2015-16 soon. The election makes no real matter to you, but you can be a strong participant! They could use a lesson in counting votes, and who better to administer that than y’all?!?! Can you draft a plan for the StuCo voting coming up this spring and then present it to the Council in hopes of getting them to agree to it? Then the points are yours!

Tough one to predict here, at least how it’ll play out, as there’s an unknown with StuCo anal-retentiveness, but the potential is awesome. Draft a plan to deliver ballots, instruct students on how to fill them out, collect, count, and accurately deliver results. Then seel StuCo on the idea to trust you to successfully pull this off. Gonna be a tough sell, as there’s a lot of eyebrow cocking that’ll happen when you present. But who knows??

councilelections

To complete:

1. Draft a voting plan that includes a Borda, plurality, and approval (at least) method built-in to the plan.

2. Present the plan to me in order to see if it’s worthy of a run by StuCo.

3. Present the plan at a StuCo meeting, trying to land the deal. (*note- if perchance I felt the plan was worthy, but StuCo declines, the points are still there for you, but only 75. You have to land the deal to get all 200 points. The bulk of this task comes from the execution of the plan, not devising it.)

4. Count the votes and declare the winner to StuCo for them to announce to the school. (of course, you DO NOT announce yourself)

Teach a Class (225 points)

Same as last semester, if you’re interested/willing, teach a short 15-30 minute lesson in class on a relevant topic (one that we’re going over or have gone over). Lots of topics to choose from this semester for you to ‘teach’, including:

U.S. Business Tax Structure, Current Small Business Success Story, U.S> Banking/Monetary System, Diversifying a Portfolio, Expose on a American Business Legend, and others!

As it was last semester, you need a lesson plan, a structure of time, and an activity for the class to participate in. Simple enough, but limited and it’s a first come first serve basis only here.

classroom

To complete:

1. Determine which lesson you’d like to present by perusing them all and choosing the one that best fits how you’d want to go about performing. Those plans are in the compressed folder at the top of this post.

2. Sit with me for ~10 minutes to discuss the plan, how you’ll go about doing the plan, with an introduction, body of the lesson, and closure being critical to the plan.

3. Write up the plan in a simple outline form for me to approve and we’ll choose the best day to do the lesson.

4. Actually teach the class!

4. Perform the lesson

Financial Soccer (125 or 40 points)

Do you like soccer? Well, Visa has a game you can play, much like Financial Football, except his one is soccer. It plays the same, answer questions correctly advance the ball forward, miss questions the other team moves against you. The questions are all financial literacy questions. In order to get points here, you need to play the game at “World-Class” level for 10 minutes and score 2 goals (at least). 125 if you can, but be warned- it’s tough.

You can play at lesser level and get 40 if you’d like as well- score one goal in 5 minutes at the lower level (semi-pro) will get you 40.

financial soccer

To complete:

1. Find this game on the internets

2. Play at the level you’d like.

3. Achieve 2 goals (or one on the lesser level).

4. Screen shot- send it to me (robert.letter@bvsd.org) with your name and financial soccer in the subject line of the email.

Logo Quiz (75 points)

Do you like that silly Logo Quiz game on the iPad? Well turn it into some points. There are levels of achievement in it, where if you manage to complete a level a new one opens up. Can yo open up the 5th level? Boom! 75 points. Just gotta run it to me and literally show me your accomplishment. I would appreciate your honesty in this particular task, that you truly start from scratch and get to the 5th level with no improper aid. This is an individual task. If you want to do this with somebody, then you’ll share the points- in other words 75/(how many participated). Might be better to just go this one alone.

logos-quiz-game

To complete:

1. Open the Logo Quiz app.

2. Play it until you open (not defeat) level 5. (although if there are those of you that can successfully continue, I guess there’s some bonus points in there, but not much- 10 per level)

3. Show me your success.
